White Rock Lake , Texas (Winter Storm)

Having survived the worst of the big chill in Texas these last few days, we took a trip down to White Rock Lake to get out of the house and enjoy some fresh air by the lake. Unsurprisingly given the recent conditions the lake looked rather different to usual with a sheet of ice stretching out deep towards the centre. It was also incredible how quiet it was in comparison with usual with no cyclists or runners to be seen on any of the trails. The only company we really encountered were of the avian variety and even those didn’t seem too happy to not be somewhere warmer.

This is one of the coolest creatures i’ve encountered in the wild, I believe it’s a Red – Tailed Hawk. It’s found all year round in Texas. It’s a big bird of prey which is distinct from other Hawks due it’s “belly band”, it’s line of spots across it’s mid-section. It’ was skittish, it probably stuck around for less than 30 seconds after we saw it, and promptly left.
Unfortunately i only got one photo as it swooped down from it’s tree. They can reach speeds of up to 120 mph though so i’m thankful i just got it in frame.
This is an American Robin, it’s rather lager than it’s UK counter part as you can see. I’ve noticed a lot these last few weeks huge flocks of these birds flying overhead.
These are American White Pelicans. They spend the winter months in Texas and are found at White Rock Lake. Earlier in the winter there were hundreds of them to be seen, on our most recent trip i only saw this pair.
About half of the lake was covered by a huge ice sheet.
I believe this is a White Throated Sparrow.
This Great Egret was sheltering from the wind on the edge of the lake.
